Discipleship is learning to live the way God wants us to live. During Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry he took the disciples aside to spend time with them and teach them to follow him. Jesus took the small group of disciples and taught them what they needed to know in order to carry the gospel forward. The key to discipleship is learning and being able to apply what is learned. It is noted throughout the Gospels that Jesus took the disciples apart to teach them. In today’s mega-churches there is little time to focus on individuals and personal growth; it is primarily to conquer the masses. When Jesus called the disciples to follow him, he told them I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4:18, Mark 1:16).
Discipleship Is…
It is the diligent and intentional teachings and practices that promote the life-long lifestyle of becoming ever more like Jesus and reproducing the Christ-life in others. (Titus 2)
Discipleship is a lifestyle (Romans 12:1).
It is a change of heart, a change of direction for a lifetime. (Psalm 86:11-12)
It is dynamic, not static. (Romans 12:2)
It is a life committed. (Psalm 56:12)
A heart and will that is surrendered. (Mark 14:36)
It is a new direction with His precepts and character for living as our example. (Psalm 119:45)
It is a purposeful commitment to the spiritual growth and health of an individual. (Psalm 57:7, Psalm 108:1)
It is a life spent seeking Christ-likeness. (Psalm 63:1, Matthew 6:33)
